Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to make an appointment? Can I see someone day-of without an appointment?

You are always welcome to come into the Writing Center and satellite locations, appointment or not. We have a relatively quiet study space where you can work on your writing and sign up for feedback when there is availability. We highly recommend making an appointment in advance, especially around midterms and finals, but appointments are not required.

How do I make an appointment?

Appointments are made through WC Online. WC Online is a writing center tool specifically designed to manage and track appointments. In addition to providing available sessions, whether in person or remotely with writing specialists, peer tutors, or for asynchronous feedback, WC Online also offers text and email reminders.

For first time users, WC Online will ask you to create an account. We recommend that you use your UC Irvine email account for this process.

What kind of appointment should I make?

For undergraduate students, we have three types of appointments available: Writing Specialists, peer tutors, and asynchronous feedback. Writing Specialists and peer tutors offer in-person (at Science Library 193) and remote appointments. Writing Specialists provide longer, more in-depth feedback. Peer tutors can talk with you about overall writing strategies, general editing, and research strategies. If none of our times or days work for you, we then recommend seeking asynchronous feedback.

For graduate students, we currently only offer appointments with Graduate Writing Consultants. We also offer regular writing groups and writing boot camps for graduate students. The best way to view our upcoming writing group times is via Campus Groups. Once you’ve logged in, search for the CEWC/Writing Center’s events or for the “Graduate Writing Group” events (they are visible to all UCI grad students). The remote writing groups require registration on Zoom, but in-person groups only require that you show up at the designated time and location. Stay tuned to our calendar and social media for updates on workshops and boot camps details.

The Writing Center offers workshops on different writing skills and strategies throughout the quarter for both undergraduate and graduate students.

What happens if I am running late to an appointment?

If you are going to be 10 or fewer minutes late to an appointment, please reach out to let us know you are going to be late but are still attending your appointment. If you need to cancel or reschedule, we suggest you call the front desk or go to WC Online to do so.
